Network & Cooperations

Fraunhofer IISB –
a reliable partner on national & international level

Sustainable research requires interdisciplinary input and extensive networking. A principle vividly lived by since the institute’s foundation. Among others, this is illustrated by our research partnership with the Energie Campus Nürnberg (EnCN) or the Technology Center for High Performance Materials THM in Freiberg, which we operate together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS. Over and above that, various national and international groups, associations and partnerships in research and industry are also part of everyday research at Fraunhofer IISB.

Our partner universities, institutes and chairs

We greatly appreciate academic cooperation, also beyond the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. That is why we foster close partnerships with the FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, the University of Bayreuth and the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. In order to ensure close communication with our partner universities, the heads of division at the IISB are also the heads of the partner chairs and institutes:

Division at Fraunhofer IISB Partner institutes and chairs Head of
Energy Materials and UWBG Semiconductor Technology Institute for Applied Physics, TU Bergakademie Freiberg Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Johannes Heitmann
Semiconductor Technology Chair of Electron Devices, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Schulze (also IISB Institute Director)
Power Electronic Systems
Chair of Power Electronics, FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin März
Intelligent Energy Systems Chair of Electronics for Electrical Energy Storage, University of Bayreuth Prof. Dr.-Ing. Vincent Lorentz

Highly skilled and dedicated professionals are vital not only for us as an institute, but also for the German and European research society and industry. This makes it all the more important to provide students and apprentices with a profound theoretical education without losing sight of practical applicability. To achieve this, Fraunhofer IISB and the Chair of Electron Devices (LEB) at the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg have established the µe-bauhaus erlangen-nürnberg. It transfers the teaching concept of the famous Bauhaus Weimar-Dessau-Berlin to the idea of a "Bauhaus of Microelectronics". The triad of studies, laboratory and research & development enables the interlinking of in-depth theoretical knowledge with the high level of practical skills and technical excellence.

An example for a successful cooperation with students from the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg is the interdisciplinary group project Evolonic. Within this project, the student team modified an outdated electric vehicle with up-to-date drive train components. The IISB supports Evolonic with technical knowledge, components for the electrification, as well as laboratory equipment and testing facilities for the vehicle modification. For some students, the Evolonic has also been the starting point for a future career at IISB.

IAP | TU Bergakademie Freiberg

Institute for Applied Physics (IAP)

At our location in Freiberg, the Fraunhofer Technology Center High Performance Materials THM, we have already been conducting joint research with the IAP since 2015, complementing each other’s competencies and sharing resources in the field of electronic device fabrication, characterization, and material processing.

Chair of Electronics for Electrical Energy Storage | University of Bayreuth

Chair of Electronics for Electrical Energy Storage

The Bavarian Center for Battery Technology (BayBatt) is located at the University of Bayreuth. Within BayBatt, the Fraunhofer IISB cooperates closely with the Chair of Electronics for Electrical Energy Storage, for example, to further develop the battery management system foxBMS© which was originally developed at the IISB.

LEB | FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg

Chair of Electron Devices (LEB)

The close collaboration of Fraunhofer IISB and the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg is living proof that partnership can be born from vicinity. Visible evidence of the joint forces’ success are the FAU’s chairs of Electron Devices (LEB) and Power Electronics (LEE). The IISB and LEB share clean rooms and laboratories and conduct joint research on various fields of research for electronic components.

LEE | FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg

Chair of Power Electronics (LEE)

Together with LEE, the IISB is researching current topics in power electronics and their fields of application. This includes, e.g., stationary decentralized power supply systems or on-board power supply for vehicles, ships and aircraft. Like at the LEB, there is close cooperation between the IISB and LEE in teaching and education: IISB employees give lectures at the chairs and supervise final theses.

Cooperations in the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region

Originating from its headquarters in the south of Erlangen, right within the southern campus of Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), the Fraunhofer IISB has a rich network of partnerships and cooperation at its disposal.

Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has a total of 76 institutes and facilities. To fully leverage their diverse competencies, the individual institutes work together in focused alliances and collaborate on projects to develop new solutions.

Joint Labs

Joint Labs offer industry the opportunity to cooperate with Fraunhofer IISB in the form of a cross-organizational development team which works together on key topics for industry. This promotes a deeper understanding of the technology, which in turn facilitates technology transfer and accelerates integration into the product. The Joint Labs can also act as an demo hub for new tools and equipment.

Professional Associations

Fraunhofer IISB's core research areas are spread along the entire value chain for power electronics, from crystal growth to power electronic systems. The professional associations in which the IISB is represented is equally broad.
